The Conjuring review

Posted : 10 years, 8 months ago on 17 August 2013 02:28 (A review of The Conjuring)

I rate movies on how much they deliver in their chosen genre - a Horror movie needs to scare, or at least unsettle - The Conjuring had great production values but with a look we have seen a 1000 times before. There were little to no surprises in this flick. Aside from Patrick Wilson being very likeable this movie doesn't have really anything to offer. The focus of the story is all over the place and it just does not scare or leave any unsettling feelings.
Disappointing

Neon Genesis Evangelion review

Interesting stuff which only the Asians and anime can get away with fusing loads of disparate things together into an enjoyable whole --- though god knows about the ending and thre are so many unanswered questions

Wonderfalls review

Posted : 11 years, 1 month ago on 24 March 2013 12:04 (A review of Wonderfalls)

Conclusion
Ignoring the one dimensional characters who are there simply to spout "witty" lines or to act as strawmen or comic foils for Jaye, and ignoring the good premise/plot being repeated basically each episode - Jaye receives a cryptic message misinterprets it causing a minor problem which later turns out to be a good thing - the show is quite enjoyable with visual tricks and a fast pace

BUT the series lacked any depth and just comes across as some teen girl wish fulfilment series -"I am lonely (despite being good looking and having lots of former boyfriends) and the hunk and I are destined to be together - anyone else in the way is a bitch or an obstacle...people love me for my unique style and my adventurous spontaneous nature"

The worst aspect of the series is there was no or little gravity to Jaye's actions and she was always bailed out by her parents with again no conflict or repercussions - sadly the most fantastical aspect of the show is the characterisation with the girls always being "sassy and strong" - of course EVERY girl in the world is that way - LOL...good looking guys are always quiet and sensitive, ugly or fat characters are losers or for comedy - hardly groundbreaking and just feeding the same BS tv churns out at an alarming fashion

So...great series if you are teen girl not so great otherwise

Overall 6/10 - started good then got sucked into a typical rom com arc

Level Up review

Posted : 11 years, 8 months ago on 24 August 2012 08:20 (A review of Level Up)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer meets Big Bang Theory for a broad stroke cartoon style live action teen comedy series - once you accept the trashiness and absurdity of it all ...its fun

It has some great lines and moments

Watchmen review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 15 July 2012 11:03 (A review of Watchmen)

Essential reading - near flawless deconstruction of the superhero genre set in a whodunnit framework which switches to a WHY-dunnit towards the end
